Special Sessions

Special sessions are very small and specialized events to be held during the conference as a set of oral and poster presentations that are highly specialized in some particular theme or consisting of the works of some particular international project. The goal of special sessions (minimum 4 papers; maximum 9) is to provide a focused discussion on innovative topics. All accepted papers will be published in a special section of the conference proceedings book, under an ISBN reference, and on digital support. All papers presented at the conference venue will be available at the SCITEPRESS Digital Library. SCITEPRESS is a member of CrossRef and every paper is given a DOI (Digital Object Identifier). The proceedings are submitted for indexation by DBLP, Web of Science / Conference Proceedings Citation Index, EI and SCOPUS.

Scope

Current machine learning techniques are able to achieve spectacular results in automatic understanding of natural images whereas in the area of medical image analysis the progress is not that evident. The problem is medical knowledge essential for proper interpretation of image content. That knowledge, possessed by relatively small number of radiological experts, usually cannot be directly expressed using mathematical formulas. This can be overcome by laborious knowledge acquisition or by techniques to some extent imitating expert behaviour. Both approaches are, however, still challenging tasks. That is why the goal of the special session is to discuss the problems in acquisition and utilization of domain knowledge in automatic understanding of semantic image structure.

Scope

It is relatively simple to assess human cognitive states such as workload, vigilance, and situational awareness using behavioral, physiological, and neurophysiological measures (e.g., functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), eye tracking, electroencephalography (EEG)) when individuals are seated. As sensors become more ubiquitous, people are attempting to use them outside the lab during typical activities (e.g., during high fidelity training, in the cockpit in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) ground control stations). However, methods to assess cognitive workload during normal activities are only recently emerging (Izzetoglu et al., 2011, McKendrick et al., 2016, Bracken et al., 2017). During this special session, we will present several projects aimed at adapting laboratory-based methods to assess human states of interest while people go about typical daily activities.

Scope

Among the leading causes of disability and high mortality are diseases of the central nervous system that are accompanied by cognitive, sensor, motor and autonomic disorders. For treatment of such diseases pharmacological methods are not always in conformity with the contemporary requirements of efficacy and safety of health care. New technologies for neuroprotection, based on application of the physical fields for formation of the neuromodulation processes in the brain structures, are promising. Participation in this Special Session of scientists, involved in development of several research directions of neurostimulation theory and techniques, will allow to formulate new strategies of the treatment process, which will be aimed to minimize health risks for each person, based on personalized strategies of prevention and therapy.
